Confucius Memorial Ceremony

The 1st Nishan Forum will invite participants to attend the opening ceremony of 2010 China Qufu International Confucius Cultural Festival.

Confucius Memorial Ceremony includes music and dance in the Confucius Temple to glory Confucius in Qufu, Shandong Province, is an integrated performing art of music, songs, dance and ritual. The annual event takes place on August 27 of the lunar calendar, Confucius’ birthday. The ceremony lasts from Sep.26th to Oct .10th since 2004.

Confucius Memorial Ceremony is a grand ritual to pay respect and cherish the memory of Confucius in the Confucius Temple. The ceremony can be traced back to 478 BC. The second year after Confucius’ death, the king of Lu kingdom gloried Confucius at the residence of Confucius, which then become the first Confucius Temple in the world. In the Han Dynasty, Emperor Liu Bang held rituals to worship Confucius, which was followed by later emperors. After Emperor Wudi of the Han Dynasty abolished all schools of learning, except Confucianism, the Confucius Temple became the place where emperors of the feudal dynasties gloried Confucius. Emperors of Yuan, Min and Qin dynasties held the ceremony in Confucius Temple in Beijing. The ceremony evolved into grand rituals of music instruments performance, singing and dancing designated by the emperor himself, who may attend the ceremony in person or send officials on his behalf or pay tribute to Confucius in his tour. The ceremony took place 196 times in total. During the Republic of China, the government gave the order to worship Confucius across China. The procedures and rituals changed a lot. The wind vessels were replaced by wreath, classical vestments by long robe and kneeling turned into bow.

In 1986, the cultural department of Qufu city recovered the ritual which has subsided for half a century and presented it on the opening ceremony of the “Tour to Confucius Hometown”. The current ceremony in Qufu is composed of four parts: opening of the ancient city, opening of Confucius Temple, public memorial and traditional memorial. New developments can be seen in music, dance and apparel.

Music and dance in the ceremony reflect Confucianism as a combination of artistic performance with political implications exactly, which best illustrates the meaning of “ritual” and benevolence. The ceremony has a strong ideological affinity, spirit of cohesion and artistic influence, which plays an irreplaceable role in carrying forward the fine traditional culture to create harmonious atmosphere, build a harmonious society and unite the whole country.

On May 20, 2006, the folk custom was approved by the State Council to be on the list of national intangible cultural heritage.
